Winter health check

Cold mornings, salted roads, dark commutes and the A9 in sleet put more strain on a car than any other time of year. Our winter check covers the things that fail in the cold – battery, tyres, lights, wipers and antifreeze – and comes with a video of anything we find.

  • Battery and charging system test
  • Tyre tread, pressures and condition – winter tyre advice
  • Antifreeze strength and coolant level
  • Lights, wipers, washers and screenwash
  • Brakes, exhaust and underbody check
  • Heater, demister and air conditioning check

Winter driving tips

  • Clear the whole car

Ice on the windscreen, roof and lights is illegal and dangerous – and it takes an ID. a few minutes on pre-conditioning to do it for you.
  • Keep the tank or battery half full

Being stuck in a closure on the A9 with no fuel or charge is no fun.
  • Carry a winter kit

Blanket, torch, scraper, phone charger, high-vis vest and a bag of grit.
  • Slow down and leave space

Stopping distances can be ten times longer on ice.
  • Use the right gear

Pull away in second on ice; in an automatic or ID., use the gentlest throttle you can.
  • Wash the salt off

Road salt attacks the underside; a regular wash protects the bodywork.

Electric cars in the cold

Cold weather can cut an electric car’s range by 20–30%. Pre-condition the cabin and battery while plugged in, use the heated seats rather than the cabin heater where you can, keep the tyres at the right pressure and plan charging stops with a margin. Our winter check for ID. models includes the heat pump, 12V battery and tyres.

FAQs

Seasonal checks – your questions answered

What is included in a winter car check?

We test the battery and charging system, check tyre tread and pressures, antifreeze strength, lights, wipers and washers, brakes, exhaust and the heating and demisting system, and send you a video of anything we find.

How much is a winter check at Camerons Volkswagen?

Ask for the current price when you book – and if the check finds anything, you get a firm quote before any work is done.

When should I get my car checked for winter?

October or November, before the first frosts. Batteries that are marginal in autumn usually fail on the first cold morning.

Do I need winter tyres in Perthshire?

They are not compulsory, but below 7°C they grip far better. If you drive rural roads, hills or ski routes regularly, winter or all-season tyres are a sensible investment.

What should I check before a long summer journey?

Tyre pressures (increase them for a full load), oil and coolant levels, the air conditioning, wipers and lights, and the towbar electrics if you are towing. Our summer check covers all of it.

Why does my electric car lose range in winter?

Cold slows the battery chemistry and heating the cabin uses energy. Pre-conditioning while plugged in, using heated seats and keeping tyres inflated all help.
