Going strong since 1975, the instantly recognisable Volkswagen Polo is currently in its sixth generation. This good-looking, simple-to-drive and roomy supermini certainly deserves its place on a shortlist of potential hatchback purchases.
Unique Exterior Design
Volkswagen and build quality go hand-in-hand, and that’s no less the case with the Polo – its five-door body style makes access to both compartments as easy as possible. This stylish hatchback features body-coloured fixtures such as bumpers and side sills, which complement your preferred paint finish perfectly. The car’s range of exterior lighting includes LED daytime running lights which, as well as providing distinctive illumination, ensure that the Polo remains clearly visible in low light conditions.
Spacious and Bold
The Mk VI Polo is bigger than ever, ensuring that passenger space is even greater than before, allowing five adults to travel in comfort. There are plenty of stowage spaces throughout, including a good-size glovebox, a generously proportioned cubby in the front compartment and expansive door bins. The Polo is a supermini that puts the emphasis on ‘super’, boasting a highly competitive, minimum-capacity 351-litre boot space. As with its exterior, the vehicle’s cabin is extremely customizable. For instance, the dashboard can be decked out in one of 13 different colours, bringing a real sense of style and cheerfulness to the interior.
Performance and Power
Entry-level Polo models are powered by a 1.0-litre 60bhp petrol engine, which delivers up to 58.96mpg and produces a 108g/km CO2 emissions figure. Optimal fuel efficiency is provided by variants that are installed with a 1.4-litre 75bhp diesel unit. This returns as much as 76.3mpg and emissions as low as 95g/km.
The Polo comes with a minimum five-inch touchscreen display, providing access to a range of infotainment features, including a six-speaker sound system, with DAB digital radio and CD player. All models include Bluetooth connectivity too – enabling audio streaming and hands-free telephoning – and USB, SD and AUX inputs.
Safe and Sound
The vehicle features an array of driver aids, such as Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Stability Control and Autonomous Emergency Braking. The latter monitors traffic ahead of the vehicle, and automatically applies brake pressure if the driver fails to do so. It also functions at typical town and city speeds and can even detect the presence of pedestrians.
