The most important safety part on your car

Free brake check

Your brakes work harder than any other safety component, and they wear a little every time you stop. Our free brake check measures pad and disc wear, tests the brake fluid, inspects hoses, callipers and the parking brake, and records it all in a video you can watch before deciding on any work.

  • Pad and disc thickness measured and compared to Volkswagen limits
  • Brake fluid tested for moisture content
  • Parking brake and ABS checked
  • Clear advice: fine for now, replace soon, or replace today

Signs your brakes need attention

  • Squealing or grinding

A high-pitched squeal usually means the wear indicator has been reached; grinding means metal on metal – stop driving and call us.
  • Longer stopping distances

If the car takes longer to stop or the pedal feels soft, the pads, discs or fluid may be worn.
  • Pulling to one side

A sticking calliper or uneven pad wear can pull the car left or right under braking.
  • Vibration through the pedal

Usually a warped or corroded brake disc.
  • Brake warning light

A red brake light can mean low fluid or a system fault – do not ignore it.
  • Handbrake travel

A parking brake that needs more pulls, or an electronic parking brake fault, needs adjusting or repair.

Electric and hybrid braking

Brakes on an electric Volkswagen

An ID. slows mostly through regenerative braking, so the pads can last far longer than on a petrol car. The flip side is that discs can corrode through lack of use, and some ID. models use drum brakes at the rear. We check both at every service and clean or replace as needed.

  • Rear drum brakes on ID.3 and ID.4 inspected and cleaned
  • Discs checked for corrosion and lip wear
  • Brake fluid still changed every two years

FAQs

Brakes – your questions answered

How much does it cost to replace brake pads on a Volkswagen?

It depends on the model. Book a free brake check and we will give you a firm written price, which we will match against any like-for-like quote using Genuine Parts from a garage within 5 miles.

How long do brake pads last?

Typically 25,000 to 60,000 miles depending on the car, your driving and the roads. Town driving and hills wear pads faster; electric cars with regenerative braking wear them much more slowly.

Do brake discs need replacing with the pads?

Not always. Discs are measured at every brake check and replaced when they reach Volkswagen’s minimum thickness or are badly corroded. We always replace them in pairs.

Why does brake fluid need changing?

Brake fluid absorbs moisture, which lowers its boiling point and can cause a spongy pedal or brake fade. Volkswagen recommends changing it every two years.

Are brakes covered by the warranty?

Brake pads and discs are wear items, so they are not covered by the new car warranty. The Genuine Parts we fit do carry their own 2-year parts and labour warranty.

Can I wait while my brakes are done?

Pads can often be done while you wait; pads and discs usually take half a day. A courtesy car or collection and delivery can be arranged if you let us know when you book.

What does the brake warning light mean?

A red brake light can mean the parking brake is on, the fluid is low or there is a fault. If it stays on with the handbrake off, stop and call us.
