Perth Audi | News & Heritage
Four generations, more than six million cars and three decades of progress. Join Perth Audi as we celebrate a compact car with a remarkable history.
When the original Audi A3 made its world premiere at the Paris motor show in 1996, it brought premium materials, distinctive design and Audi engineering to a compact hatchback. Thirty years later, the A3 name represents a model family shaped by changing lifestyles, new technology and a continuing focus on everyday usability.
At Perth Audi, part of Cameron Motor Group, the anniversary offers an opportunity to look back at the milestones behind this familiar Audi name. For drivers in Perthshire and across Scotland, it is also a chance to see how the compact car has evolved around expectations of comfort, practicality and performance.

FIRST GENERATION | 1996–2003
The first Audi A3 arrived as a three-door hatchback. Its distinctive silhouette and carefully finished interior brought an emphasis on quality to a smaller car, with a choice of equipment that allowed customers to tailor it to their preferences.
The family developed quickly. quattro all-wheel drive joined the A3 story in 1998, followed by a five-door version and the first S3 in 1999. Everyday practicality and sporting character were becoming defining themes.
SECOND GENERATION | 2003–2013
The second generation brought more interior space and advances in chassis engineering. In 2004, the A3 Sportback introduced a distinctive five-door shape and the Singleframe grille that became a recognisable feature of Audi design.
The A3 Cabriolet followed in 2008, bringing open-top motoring to the family. In 2011, the first RS 3 Sportback introduced five-cylinder power and Audi Sport performance to the compact range.
THIRD GENERATION | 2012–2020
The third-generation A3 introduced a new platform, lightweight construction and a stronger emphasis on connectivity and driver assistance. A retractable central display became a distinctive feature of its interior.
The A3 Saloon joined the family in 2013, offering another interpretation of the model’s compact proportions. In 2014, the A3 Sportback e-tron brought plug-in hybrid technology to the range.
Audi unveiled the RS 3 Saloon in 2016, extending the performance family beyond the Sportback body style.
FOURTH GENERATION | INTRODUCED IN 2020
The fourth generation brought sharper styling and a new touch-based operating concept. Selected powertrains introduced mild-hybrid technology, reflecting the continued development of the A3 around changing customer needs.
The performance models progressed too. A new RS 3 arrived in 2021 with a rear torque splitter, while the S3 received significant engineering updates in 2024. Technology continued to evolve alongside the A3 family’s recognisable compact proportions.
Choosing a car in Scotland can mean balancing town driving with longer journeys, changing weather and the demands of work or family life. The A3’s history reflects that variety through different body styles, evolving powertrains and developments in comfort and technology.
If you are considering your next Audi, start with the journeys you make most often. Compare passenger space, boot access, running costs and the equipment that matters to you. When considering a plug-in hybrid, think about where and how regularly you would charge it.

Cameron Motor Group Heritage
The A3’s anniversary sits within a longer local motoring story. Cameron Motor Group traces its origins to 1930, when Ian H. Cameron established the business at Bridgend in Perth with a £300 loan.
Today, Perth Audi is part of that family-owned group. Our home at 166 Dunkeld Road connects the Audi range with a business whose roots are firmly in Perth.
