The immediately recognisable Volkswagen Beetle made its début in 1938, and there has been little reason to change its quirky good looks over the years. The Beetle is a genuine design classic; its retro good looks ensure that it still manages to turn heads more than 70 years later.
The classic Beetle silhouette is present and correct, as are the vehicle’s distinctively bolstered wheel arches. The car is enhanced by a number of striking fixtures, such as body-coloured door mirrors, which are also power-operated, heated and fitted with integrated indicators. Next-level Design trims add, among other things, lightweight and stylish 17-inch alloy wheels that help to improve efficiency.
Luxurious and Funky Interior
The Beetle is an ideal family car, not just because of its appealing design but because it comfortably seats two adults in its front compartment and three younger travellers in the back row. Alternatively, the vehicle more than adequately conveys two adults in its rear compartment. All models include air conditioning, ensuring that the car’s in-cabin climate is always easy to maintain. Cubby spaces abound, including two glove compartments and generously-sized door pockets. The vehicle’s 310-litre boot space can swiftly be increased to 905 litres when split-folding rear seats are flipped. You can treat the Beetle’s cabin to one of a number of body-coloured hues – on the dashboard, for example – bringing a sporty look to the interior.
Performance and Power
The Beetle typically comes with a 1.2-litre 105bhp petrol engine. If you require optimal fuel efficiency, choose a model that is installed with a 2.0-litre 110bhp diesel unit. This returns as much as 65.7mpg and produces emissions as low as 113g/km. The sportiest Beetle iteration is powered by a 1.4-litre petrol engine, which delivers 250Nm of torque and 0-60mph in approximately 8.5 seconds.
Safe and Sound
If you’re driving alone or if conversation dries up, an eight-speaker sound system is in place to keep you entertained. It comes with a CD player, DAB radio and AM/FM tuner, providing you with lots of audio choice. Bluetooth connectivity is included too, enabling streaming from compatible media devices.
Awarded a five-star crash-test rating by Euro NCAP, the Beetle is a very safe car to travel in. It’s fitted with a wide range of driver aids and passive protective features, such as seatbelt pre-tensioners and load-limiters, ISOFIX child-seat anchor points and Electronic Stability Control. It also comes with Post-collision Braking System, which utilises the car’s airbag sensors to automatically apply brake pressure after a collision with another car.
