Exterior design

For journeys on and off the beaten track, this crossover is the perfect fit. The new Volvo XC60 is more compact than the bigger XC90 model, yet it features similar curvaceous styling. Select the SE Lux trim to gain sophisticated 18-inch alloy wheels, or the sporty R-Design for a bolstered rear bumper. Whichever model you go for, you can be sure you’re getting premium Swedish design at its finest.

Interior design

An upmarket interior awaits on board the new Volvo XC60. From your heightened driving position, you’ll enjoy an optimum view of the road ahead. As for materials, you can expect nothing less than the highest quality, ensuring your complete comfort. The floating centre console places everything within easy reach of the driver, along with a handy cubbyhole for hiding away smaller items.

Families will welcome the addition of the pioneering rear seat cushions, which can be raised to create booster seats at two pre-set heights. You’ll also love the 495-litre boot, which increases to 1,455 litres when you fold down the rear seats.

Engines and performance

You can opt between front or all-wheel drive depending on your driving style – and you’ll always get a class-leading chassis with corner traction control for outstanding handling. When it comes to engines, If you want a punchy petrol unit, choose the T5 – it has a 0 to 60mph time of around seven seconds.

Safety and technology

The new Volvo XC60’s safety equipment is exceptional – and it’s earned this model a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. A suite of airbags provides all-round protection for big and small occupants. Stability systems such as emergency braking scan for pedestrians, bringing the car to a halt when they detect a potential impact.

What Car? Car of the Year Awards 2022

Volvo XC40 Best Family SUV

We are delighted that the Volvo XC40 has been awarded the Best Family SUV in 2022. Find out why with a few statements from What Car?...

"Looking at the distinctive design of the Volvo XC40, you begin to wonder if the German premium brands have it wrong – their ‘Russian doll’ designs lead to a very strong resemblance between models, which often leaves you struggling to tell one from another. At the very least, Volvo's creativity is jolly refreshing."

"The regular petrol versions of the XC40 are more comfortable than any of their chief rivals, including the firm-riding BMW X1 and the unsettled Jaguar E-Pace. The XC40 betters even some relatively comfortable alternatives, such as the Range Rover Evoque and Volkswagen Tiguan."

"The XC40 handles perfectly adequately if you drive it in a relaxed manner, which we expect most people will. It's not a sporty SUV, though, so if you press on, the body leans a fair bit through corners and you'll notice that the steering isn't particularly feelsome."
